Face to Face Training

From start to finish, AASB's training opportunities are designed to accommodate our diverse membership's schedules and budgets. Most statewide conferences overlap weekends to reduce time away from home and jobs, and travel isn't necessary for our self-paced digital learning options.

Convention:

Nearly 500 school board members and education leaders from across the state gather for the annual AASB Convention and Delegate Assembly. The three-day event in early December features an array of clinics on timely topics, general sessions featuring keynote speakers, sponsored breaks and exhibits of education-related products and services. Participants earn academy hours. Also, delegates from member school boards assemble for AASB's annual business meeting (Delegate Assembly) to elect officers, vote on resolutions and approve bylaws changes.

District Meetings (Fall):

Nine district directors, who represent geographical areas of the state, serve as part of the board that governs AASB. These directors lead district meetings each fall in their areas. Eligible attendees earn 1 academy hour in the AASB School Board Member Academy. The evening sessions include networking, dinner and a feature presentation on an important education or board governance issue. AASB's Professional Sustaining Members, political and education leaders and other dignitaries often attend as special guests.

Summer Conference:

The academy keeps boards up to date on vital public education and school governance issues through informative programming each summer at its highly attended annual conference. Participants earn hours toward Academy Level Requirements, and there are numerous opportunities for school board members, superintendents, exhibitors and sponsors to interact with other education leaders and vendors from across the state.

Workshops:

Workshops are often offered prior to or shortly after AASB's spring and fall conferences. These workshops go deep on key education topics and are designed for school board members who want to go beyond the basics. AASB hosts a regional workshop on a hot topic in education that occurs at a location in the northern end of the state and and a location in the south. Neighboring school boards are also encouraged to come together and invite AASB to provide customizable workshops for a cluster of schol boards.

Whole Board Training:

AASB offers interactive training for the whole school board. As an added-value service to members, there are three no-cost training sessions for the whole board – Roles and Responsibilities; Conducting a Tax Referendum; and a facilitated Superintendent Search Work Session (mileage reimbursable up to $150).

For a fee ($550 to $950), boards may take advantage of customizable training sessions on such topics as Better Boardsmanship; Data First; Community Engagement; Media & Public Relations; Board Self-Evaluation; Facilitated Goal Setting; Conflict Resolution; Build a Better Board; Legal Topics; and Reading Financial Statements. AASB also offers whole board book/case studies as well as site visits so boards can experience first-hand the best practices in successful schools and systems. At least 2 hours of the state-required school board member training must be done as a whole board.
