Mary Hooks has been a member of the Macon County school board since 2010 and currently serves as board vice president. She was appointed as AASB's president-elect in 2021 and became AASB president in December 2022, a position she held until December 2023. Mary previously served two terms as AASB District 4 Director. 

She has served on a number of AASB committees, including the Advocacy, Board Training Advisory, Bylaws and Resolutions Committees and the 2018 School Board Governance Improvement Act Review Task Force. Mary has achieved the distinction of Master Honor Roll status in the AASB School Board Member Academy. She also was recognized as a 2016 All-State School Board Member, the highest honor AASB bestows to honor exemplary boardmanship and leadership.

A retired educator, Mary has participated in numerous programs, committees and boards ranging from suicide prevention, the Children's Policy Council, Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies (ALSDE) to the promotion of voter registration. One such program was the Distinguished Young Women scholarship competition, formerly known as Junior Miss, for which she served as chairman for more than 20 years. A Tuskegee Resident, Mary is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
