School System Spotlight: Oxford City Schools
AASB School System Spotlight
13-Aug-2026

Each month, we'll spotlight the wonderful individuals serving on our school boards or the outstanding work
being done by school systems across the state!

Oxford City Schools (OCS) has built a culture of continuous improvement by bringing educators together around a shared focus: using data, instructional best practices and strong leadership to help every student succeed. That commitment has helped them move from a “B” to an “A” on the state accountability system and earn the Southern Regional Education Board’s (SREB) 2026 District Leadership Award, recognizing OCS for its significant gains in student achievement and its commitment to strengthening instruction.
Turning Data Into Action
The school system's progress is rooted in a systemwide approach to school improvement. Through SREB’s Making Schools Work framework, system and school leaders worked alongside teachers to identify instructional priorities, examine student data and develop strategies tailored to the needs of their schools.
Rather than treating improvement as a series of individual initiatives, OCS focused on creating alignment across the school system. Educators established clear instructional priorities connected to grade-level standards with a particular emphasis on strengthening mathematics instruction.
That shared focus helped create greater consistency in classrooms while giving teachers and school leaders a common language for discussing instruction, student learning and areas for growth.
Strengthening Mathematics Instruction
Mathematics has been a central part of OCS's improvement strategy. Following SREB’s Powerful Instructional Practices, teachers designed lesson plans that challenged students with complex, real-world assignments that required problem solving, reasoning and mathematical modeling skills.
System educators worked to strengthen math instruction by connecting curriculum, classroom practices and assessment data, allowing educators to better understand what students know and where additional support is needed.
Building a Culture That Lasts
With a shared vision for instruction and use of data to guide the work of educators, OCS is showing what can happen when improvement becomes more than a goal. It becomes part of the culture. The system is proving that lasting achievement begins with a school community willing to learn, adapt and grow together.
