Read below to learn more about Dr. Pickett!

Other than your service as a school board member, tell us about your career/ professional background.

I have been employed by the Alabama State Department of Education as an education specialist in educational technology for two years now. I've been in education for a while. I was in Tennessee for 6 years and spent 11.5 years as a school counselor, which is one of my greatest accomplishments!

What inspired you to join the school board?

I was inspired by the opportunity to give back to the community I graduated from! I kept up with what was going on in the area and after moving back to Alabama I felt I had insight to bring to the board from my experience in education.

What is your favorite part about being a school board member?

Being able to just be a part of things! Whenever any department calls I am ready to volunteer. Even if it's the athletics department. The main thing for me is to lead by example. If students see their leaders giving back, then hopefully that will encourage them to do the same!

What are you most proud of accomplishing as a member of your school board?

The Freedom School initiative that we brought on last summer– everyone who participated said it brought them a lot of self-awareness. The students were able to learn and build on new skills in reading. The initiative was great for Bullock County. I’m also proud of our handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. We developed a plan, and our plan was shared with a lot of systems across the state! Even when other schools began to return to classrooms we did not budge on our plan.

What do you do outside of the school board, and what are some of your hobbies?

I am heavily involved in health & wellness. I dedicate a lot of time to my sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and my alumni association at Alabama A&M. I also serve of the AAMU Board of Trustees. I am still considered a newlywed, so I spend a lot of time with my husband and my 16-year-old son who is a constant joy in my life! I also enjoy jumping rope! I have dabbled in acting through small community theater. and I had the most lines in “Dixie Swim Club”. I even portrayed a character named Sherry (like Scherrie) Hollinger. It seemed like it was meant to be!

A fun fact most people don't know about me is...

I absolutely love sports— especially football, but I am not athletic at all!

What is your favorite inspirational quote?

I'd have to go with:  “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."Philippians 4:13

I am very confident, and I do believe I can do anything!
