Read below to learn more about Leo Branch, Sr.!

Q: What is your current occupation? If retired, what did you do before?

A: I am a retired employee of the Greene County Steam Plant (a division of Alabama Power Company). I worked there for 35 and 1/2 years as an industrial mechanic, maintaining and repairing the plant’s equipment.

Q: How long have you been on the school board, and what inspired you to join?

A: I have been serving on the school board for the past 23 and 1/2 years. I began my involvement with the school system by showing up as a parent of four children. I worked with the school and fundraising projects, chaperoned classes on field trips, volunteered at special events and served as PTA president for many years.

Q: What excites you most about being a school board member?

A: The most exciting part about being a school board member is the role board members play in helping to set a vision in the importance of educating our students. I enjoy making and developing good policies for the schools and staff, making good decisions to manage our finances, ensuring we are adhering to all federal and state laws and policies, and most importantly assisting in hiring the best employees possible for our school system.

Q: What’s one key thing you’ve learned since becoming a board member?

A: The one most important thing I have learned since becoming a school board member is that we must work as a unit. It's not about me, but about the best decisions for our school system and how that impacts the success of our students' education.

Q: Are there any special initiatives or projects you are particularly proud of accomplishing with your board? Anything you’re looking forward to working on together as a team?

A: There are several special projects that I am proud of! One being securing funds for our new high school. Now we are in the first phase of securing funds and adding the track and field, and starting work on building the stadium, baseball and softball field at the school. Also, our focus on our college and career ready program at the Greene County Career Center is special to me. As a team, we all are focused on moving our system up on the State Report Card, because the education of our students is a top priority as well as giving them a good start in becoming a productive citizen in our society.

Q: What is one piece of advice you would share with an incoming board member?

A: Learn your role as a school board member! Attend the AASB Roles and Responsibilities (orientation) training for new board members. There are policies and laws one must follow in making good decisions for your school system.

Q: What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of your role as a board member?

A: Some of my lifelong interests are farming, raising my own fruits, vegetables and animals. I am also committed to being a good husband, father and grandfather. My church is very important to me. I serve as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and as church treasurer.

Q: Finish the sentence. One thing you should know about me is…

A: I'm all business when it comes to the education and the safety of our students and employees.

Q: What is your favorite inspirational quote or mantra that keeps you motivated?

A: One of my favorite quotes that motivates me is one from former State Senator Hank Sanders: “The challenges are great but the blessings are greater.” Although the challenges are great, we still must remain motivated, focused and press on because with God all things are possible. Matthew 19:26
