Board Member Spotlight: Kacey Johnston

Each month we'll be featuring school board members in an effort to learn more about the wonderful individuals serving on our boards!

Kacey Johnston joined the Franklin County school board in 2018 and has reached Level 3 of the AASB School Board Member Academy. Her love for the Red Bay community inspired her to join the school board and work hard to ensure students are granted the same impactful opportunities she was as a Red Bay School student.

Read below to learn more about Kacey!

1. What is your current occupation?

I am a registered dietician nutritionist for DaVita Kidney Care. I educate and care for people who need dialysis, and I love it.

2. What inspired you to join the school board?

A love for Red Bay School and desire for it to be the best!

3. What is your favorite part about being a school board member?

The students are my favorite. I like seeing them have fun learning and achieving great things. I like to hear them say great things about their school, whether it be about their day, principal, teachers, staff, lunch or playground. The students are special, and hearing good things from them makes my work rewarding.

4. What’s one thing you’ve learned since becoming a board member?

We often want things to be done quickly so that we can move on to something else, but change and progress usually takes more time than we expect to see it accomplished.

5. Is there anything you are particularly proud of accomplishing as a board member?

After the onset of Covid in 2020 and suspension of classes, returning to school was an uncertain time. Those weeks required lots of prayer, hope and faith that we would make the correct decisions. I am grateful for the number of days that our school system was able to hold in-person instruction for our students during that time. I'm forever proud of how our school leaders, staff and students stepped up to the plate and made it happen!

6. What are some of your hobbies?

I enjoy cooking for my family and friends, and baking cakes too.

7. Is there a fun or interesting fact you would like to share about yourself?

When I was in high school, my cousin and I sang the national anthem on many occasions. One of my favorite memories was singing it at the closing ceremony of The National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. Red Bay School and the Red Bay community provided me with many wonderful opportunities for which to be grateful. I am thankful these type of opportunities are still be available for our students.

8. Do you have a favorite inspirational quote you can share with us?

I believe it was Theodore Roosevelt who said, “No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.”

Additional comments:

My husband, Hugh, is a science teacher at Red Bay School. We have three boys, Cayson,14; Talon,13; and Wilson,4. Time spent with family is the best time.
