AASB Recognizes 2025 Advocacy Award Recipients

The Alabama Association of School Boards honored recipients of its A-Team Advocacy Award during the association’s Annual Convention held at The Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa Dec. 4-6. The honorees included Michael Webb of the Calhoun County Board of Education and Scott Newberry of the Madison City Board of Education.

AASB launched the award in 2023 to annually recognize local school board members who successfully engage in legislative and policy advocacy in their school board service. Webb and Newberry were recognized during a Dec. 5 awards luncheon celebrating honorees’ commitment to advancing public education across Alabama.

“Our A-Team Advocacy Award honorees remind us of what true leadership looks like in public education,” said AASB Executive Director Sally Smith. “Their dedication to amplifying the voices of students, families and educators strengthens the foundation of every school community in our state.”

Michael Webb

Michael Webb has consistently led with integrity and a deep sense of purpose. As president of the Calhoun County Board of Education and District 6 director for AASB, he has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advancing policies and initiatives that support excellence in education. He regularly participates in advocacy days in Montgomery, where he engages legislators with clarity, respect and a student-centered vision. Additionally, he has represented his district and state at national school board events, including those in Washington, D.C., where his voice and leadership have been instrumental in highlighting the needs and priorities of Alabama’s students.

“Michael Webb embodies the spirit of the AASB Advocacy Award,” said Tony Willis, Superintendent of Calhoun County Schools. “His thoughtful approach, combined with his willingness to listen and collaborate, has earned him the trust and respect of colleagues, policymakers and community members alike.”

Scott Newberry

Scott Newberry, a member of the Madison City Board of Education since 2022, has distinguished himself through his thoughtful, analytical approach to decision-making and commitment to students, teachers and staff. Beyond his board duties, Newberry actively participates in Parent Teacher Associations across all schools in the district and volunteers his time supporting activities such as chess, softball, theater, football and other academic and athletic events.

“Scott Newberry’s mindset is uniquely balanced by his huge heart for students, teachers and staff,” said Travis Cummings, President of the Madison City Board of Education. “He is truly a stand-up gentleman who does not require admiration for his service.”

The A-Team Advocacy Award honors local leaders whose advocacy efforts elevate the voices of Alabama’s school boards in shaping education policy at the federal, state and local levels.
