AASB is the official voice of the state's local school boards and other boards governing K-12 public education agencies. We are dedicated to improving educational opportunities for all Alabama public school students through the improvement of local lay education governance.
By pooling resources through its membership, AASB provides services which one school board could not economically provide alone. Boardmanship skills training, policy services. risk management programs and practical publications are among the many services provided to AASB members. In addition, AASB represents the interests of its members before the state Legislature, state Board of Education and other state and national agencies.
Service-Oriented
AASB continually strives to adapt its services to meet members' needs. Founded in 1949, AASB has grown in size and stature as a vocal advocate of local school boards. In 1955, the Alabama Legislature designated AASB as the "organization and representative agency of the members of the school boards of Alabama." The act authorizes local boards to cooperate with the association, pay membership fees and reimburses board members for expenses incurred while participating in AASB programs. And participate they do. In recent years, AASB proudly has claimed 100 percent membership.
Governance
A 14-member Board of Directors governs AASB in much the same way local school boards govern their schools.
The board consists of four officers, nine directors representing geographical locations in the state and a member of the state Board of Education.
State officers -- president, president-elect and vice president -- are elected to two-year terms. The immediate past president also serves as an officer. Officers are elected by the Delegate Assembly, which is comprised of representatives from all member school boards. Directors are elected to two-year terms by the member boards in their districts. In addition, some districts also elect officers.
The board meets about five times a year to direct association activities as determined by the Delegate Assembly. The Delegate Assembly, which convenes during the annual convention, establishes AASB goals and positions on major education issues.
Members also participate in association governance through various committees. A variety of committees advise the board on AASB activities, including Budget and Finance, Resolutions, Constitution and Bylaws, Nominating, Executive/Legislative, Convention Planning and Summer Conference Planning. Committee members are appointed for one-year terms by the AASB president with the approval of the Board of Directors.
Based in Montgomery, AASB is supported by membership dues and proceeds from association activities.
