Susan Salter

Susan sometimes refers to herself as a "recycled" AASB staff member. She first joined the AASB staff in 1995 and served as the association's director of public relations for a decade. From 2005 to 2008, she served as director of membership services and oversaw the School Board Member Academy.

Susan is currently the AASB director of leadership development and oversees the association's training program, creating and delivering whole board training sessions for board leadership teams and planning the content of AASB conferences. She also oversees several services, including superintendent search, strategic planning and superintendent evaluation.

She previously served as director of university relations for Auburn University at Montgomery and as the director of public information for the Montgomery County Board of Education. She is a trained community mediator, a graduate of Leadership Montgomery and a former member of the boards of the Montgomery County Council of PTA and the Girl Scout Council of Alabama.

She is a former president of the National Affiliation of Superintendent Searchers, a member of the Federation of Trainers and Conference Planners and former president of the Council of School Board Association Communicators.

Susan has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Auburn University and is a recipient of the National School Public Relations Association’s Gold Medallion Award and the American Society of Association Executives’ Award of Excellence in Education. She is a former member of the Governor’s Commission on Quality Teaching, the Learning First Alliance of Alabama and the National School Boards Association’s Federation Trainers Group. She also is a past president of NSBA’s Council of School Board Association Communicators and served two terms on the executive committee of the Alabama School Public Relations Association.

She has a son and two stepdaughters.
