As AASB's member engagement representative, Dr. Suzanne Freeman works to cultivate positive relationships with AASB members through phone calls, in-person visits and training workshops. She ensures members are aware of the various services and programs AASB offers to assist school boards in achieving effective board governance, and she refers members to appropriate staff based on specific interests and inquiries. In addition, Suzanne attends all major AASB conferences and events, where you'll find her smiling face at the AASB booth, scanning name badges and helping out wherever she is needed.

With over 31 years of experience in public education, Suzanne has served as a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent. She served as a school superintendent for over 15 years in three different districts.

In 2009, Suzanne was Alabama’s Superintendent of the Year and a finalist for the National Superintendent of the Year. She was the 2010 recipient of the Chiquita Marbury Technology Innovation Award from the Alabama State Department of Education. She served as co-chair of A+ Education Partnership Council, as a board member and district president of School Superintendents of Alabama (SSA), as a board member for Alabama Partnership for Children, and as a member of Auburn University’s National Advisory Council for the College of Education. She currently serves on a task force with Education Reimagined in which she visits learner-centered schools across the country with a team of like-minded colleagues. Through her education blog, SuzanneFreeman.org, she also works to inspire educators, parents and learners alike to transform and create schools with a culture of intellectual curiosity.

Suzanne earned her bachelor’s degree from Asbury College and her master’s degree and Ph.D. from Auburn University. She and her husband Neal live on Logan Martin Lake in Talladega, Ala., and they have two adult children and a son-in-law.
