Summer Conference 2007
Summer Conference 2007 will help you hone your leadership, teamwork and crisis-management skills to create a rock-solid governance team. Whether you’re new to the board or a long-time member, Summer Conference will provide insights and skills you can use even before you shake all the sand out of your luggage.
Bring your whole board and superintendent for a chance to learn with and about each vital member of the governance team.
Becoming Better Leaders
What’s your leadership style? Does it mesh with the superintendent’s and
your fellow board members’ styles? Does it sometimes seem like you spin
your wheels in the sand when your team tries to resolve tough issues? Michael Cheney, an executive coach and CEO of Persogenics, will help
you understand your own style and teach you to work with team
members whose own styles are very different. All registrants will be asked
to complete an online profile before the conference so you can get the
most from Michael’s sessions. Plus, attendees will have the chance after
the conference to take an additional assessment of their skills in six key areas of
leadership. You’ll get a free, personalized report citing your strengths and suggesting ways to strengthen areas you may want to shore up.
Becoming Better Team Members
Whether your school board is assembled by the city council or voters,
coming together as a strong team won’t just happen. Veteran trainer and
author Larry Johnson will help you develop the kind of honest, productive
communication that cements the bonds among colleagues and helps
teams weather challenges together. Using lessons from his highly successful
book “Absolute Honesty,” Johnson will help you enhance your leadership
by establishing a new standard of communication – one that encourages
creativity, candid discussion and healthy debate.
Managing Crisis
From tornadoes to bus wrecks to scandals, this school year has been a microcosm of the kinds of crises that you may face during your tenure on the school board. Summer Conference 2007 will open Sunday afternoon with a candid panel discussion among some of the education leaders who have faced these issues and lived to tell about it. Panelists will include Huntsville Superintendent Dr. Ann Roy Moore; Limestone County Superintendent Dr. Barry Carroll; veteran school board attorney J.R. Brooks, who represents the Huntsville and Limestone County boards; and Assistant Enterprise Superintendent Dr. Bob Phares. The panelists will talk about the surprises and unanticipated issues that can complicate high-profile events even when you’re well prepared for a crisis.
