Lack of Quorum Moves State Board Agenda to April 9

Four members just weren't enough for a quorum of the state Board of Education, which ultimately postponed its March 12 K-12 meeting agenda until April 9.

Board Vice President Randy McKinney and President Pro Tem Dr. Mary Jane Caylor assured the audience of attendees that the lack of quorum was a very rare occurrence.

With official votes on resolutions to occur in April, the board members and state Superintendent of Education, Dr. Joe Morton, went on to recognize those who traveled to Montgomery for the meeting.

Among them was Alabama Association of School Boards President Sue Helms, who is also president of the Madison Board of Education. The Madison City School System is the only one in the state and among just three nationwide to be highlighted as a 2009 National School Boards Association Education Technology Site.

School technology professionals from around the country will visit Madison City Schools March 25-27 and learn about distance learning, 24-hour access, open resource computer labs, mobile laptop labs, student workstations, multimedia teaching workstations and more. Register for the event.

The next State Board Work Session will be held March 26, at the Gordon Persons Building in Montgomery, Alabama. The board's work session for K-12 will be March 26.

Use the Promise of Student Success as a Guide in These Tough Times

"Keep your eyes on the prize" is a worn cliche' that bears great meaning in highly volatile economic times like these. Ultimately, if students are to achieve at higher levels, school boards have to keep moving ahead, continue the progress they've begun and shield students as much as possible from the economic downturn.
Learn how to do just that at AASB's July 26-28 Academy Conference, "Navigating Rough Waters, Guided by Student Success." This year's AASB Summer Conference comes in the middle of summer vacations, so you'll want to beat the housing rush and make your reservations early.

If you're a new board member or a veteran in need of a refresher, you'll also want to attend the leadership orientation course (Leadership I) scheduled for July 25-26.

Don't miss the Alabama Council of School Board Attorneys' annual conference, July 26-27. And, board presidents will gather for a roundtable discussion on July 27. All events will be at the Perdido Hotel in Orange Beach.
