2009 ELECTIONS: AASB NAMES DISTRICT DIRECTORS 

MONTGOMERY, AL – (November 2009) –Alabama Association of School Boards Executive Director Sally Howell, J.D., recently announced results of the 2009 district director elections.

 

District Directors Bill Minor of District 2 and Pam Doyle of District 8 were re-elected. Newly elected directors include District 9 Director Dr. Jennie Robinson of Huntsville, District 4 Director Charlotte Meadows of Montgomery County and District 6 Director Larry Stewart of Calhoun County.

 

In September, nominations were opened in all districts. Minor, Doyle and Robinson were unopposed and automatically selected in accordance with AASB bylaws. In October, votes were cast by each school board in AASB Districts 4 and 6. District directors, representing nine geographic areas, may serve up to two, two-year terms on the association’s Board of Directors as long as they remain members of local school boards.

 

Minor is a member of the Dallas County Board of Education, which he has served since 1988. He first joined the AASB Board of Directors in 2007. As District 2 director, Minor represents school boards in Autauga, Bibb, Butler, Chilton, Choctaw, Dallas, Lowndes, Marengo, Perry and Wilcox counties and in Demopolis, Linden and Selma.

 

This year, Minor attained the Master’s Honor Roll of AASB’s School Board Member Academy. He has served as chairman of AASB’s Academy Advisory Committee and represents the association as part of the National School Boards Association’s Relations Network. He also has served on AASB’s Bylaws, Convention Planning and Resolutions committees.  He is active in the national, state and local levels of the educator’s association and is a member of the Alabama High School Athletic Association and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The real estate sales associate is a principal in the Selma school system. 

 

Doyle is member of the Muscle Shoals Board of Education, which she has served since 2001. She first joined the AASB Board of Directors in 2007. As District 8 director, Doyle represents school boards in Athens, Cullman, Decatur, Florence, Haleyville, Hartselle, Muscle Shoals, Russellville, Sheffield and Tuscumbia and in Colbert, Cullman, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Morgan and Winston counties.

 

This year, Doyle reached the master level of the School Board Member Academy for the third year.  She also chaired AASB’s Resolutions Committee and has served as vice chairman of AASB’s Multicultural Committee.  Active in her community, Doyle has led the Shoals Chamber of Commerce, serves as treasurer of the Greater Shoals Rotary and serves on the Northwest-Shoals Community College Foundation Board and the Citizens Bank & Savings Advisory Board.  She owns and operates Superior Print Solutions.

 

Robinson has been a member of the Huntsville Board of Education since 2002. As District 9 director, she represents school boards in Albertville, Arab, Boaz, Guntersville, Huntsville, Jackson, Madison, Oneonta and Scottsboro and in Madison, Blount and Marshall counties.

 

Robinson reached master level in AASB’s academy for the second time this year. She also has served on AASB’s Convention Planning, Resolutions and Leader to Leader committees. Robinson also serves as secretary of the Greater Huntsville Rotary Club, is an ex-officio member of the City of Huntsville Subdivision Planning Committee, has served on the VOICES for Alabama’s Children Board and is an honorary Lifetime Member of Alabama PTA. She is a self-employed consultant with Personnel Best Training and Development. She received her master’s degree and Ph.D. in consumer behavior from Purdue University and bachelor’s degree in retail management from the University of Utah.

 

Meadows is a member of the Montgomery County Board of Education, which she has served since 2006. As District 4 director, she will represent school boards in Alexander City, Auburn, Lanett, Opelika, Phenix City, Roanoke and Tallassee; in Bullock, Chambers, Clay, Coosa, Elmore, Lee, Macon, Montgomery, Randolph, Russell and Tallapoosa counties; and the Alabama Department of Youth Services board. 

 

Meadows has reached Level III in AASB’s School Board Member Academy. She also served on AASB’s Resolutions Committee this year and has served on AASB’s Leader to Leader Committee. She was also an Action Teach Leader for AASB’s Strategic Plan Development.

 

Stewart is a member of the Calhoun County Board of Education, which he has served since 2000. As District 6 director, he represents school boards in Anniston, Fort Payne, Gadsden, Jacksonville, Oxford, Pell City, Piedmont, St. Clair, Sylacauga and Talladega; in Attalla, Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, DeKalb, Etowah, Talladega counties; and the Alabama Institute For the Deaf and Blind board.   

 

Stewart has reached Level III in AASB’s School Board Member Academy. He received his bachelor’s degree in education from Jacksonville State University and also holds two master’s degrees, one in education and the other in school administration. Stewart serves as president of the Alexandria Civitan Club, has served as treasurer and past president of the Calhoun County Education Retirees Association and is a founding member of the JSU Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, Jacksonville Exchange Club, JSU Archaeology Club and JSU Alumni Association.

 

Meadows officially begins her first term at the close of AASB’s convention Dec. 5. After the election, Stewart was appointed by AASB President Sue Helms to immediately fill the District 6 vacancy that occurred when the former director no longer served on a local school board. In District 9, a special election was called to replace a director who also no longer served on a local school board. Robinson officially began serving as director at the close of the Fall AASB District Meeting Sept. 22.

 

These new leaders join current district directors Stephanie Walker of Brewton, District 1; Roxie Kitchens of Troy, District 3; Jennifer Parsons of Jefferson County, District 5; and Brett Whitehead of Tuscaloosa County, District 7.

 

The district directors, along with AASB’s elected officers, govern the association’s activities. AASB represents all of the state’s public local school boards. For 60 years, AASB has served education leaders and the interests of local lay control of public education. The association’s mission is to develop excellent school board leaders through quality training, advocacy and services.
