Leadership for Developing
A Highly Effective Staff
An AASB Academy Core Core |
March 14-15 at The Wynfrey Hotel
Nothing impacts achievement more than your ability to place – and keep – a caring, competent teacher in the every classroom. But teacher shortages, high teacher
turnover
rates and competition from the private sector make that
an increasingly daunting task.
Leadership for Developing a Highly Effective Staff will give your governance team the tools to tackle those challenges and create a school system that is healthy from the inside out.
Attend and learn:
■ Keys to motivating employee performance
■ What your employees want from their jobs and how you are meeting those expectations
■ What PEPE does and does not tell you about employee performance
■ How the school board drives performance
Learn what your employees think
During the conference, Eric Hirsch, director of research at the New Teacher Center, will unveil the results of Alabama’s first Teaching & Learning Conditions Survey. Backed by AASB and other state education groups, the survey asked every certificated employee in every public school about working conditions, leadership, instructional time and professional development. If 50 percent or more of your system’s educators responded, you will receive your systemwide data along with training by Hirsch on how to use the data to bolster strengths and address areas of concern.
Learn to lead excellence
The conference will open with a keynote address by Lt. Gen. Stephen Lorenz, commander of Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery. An award-winning leader, Lorenz is known for motivating staff to achieve excellence every day.
He will discuss ways to create a culture of high expectation and the kind of leadership it takes to make it happen.
Learn to make it happen
Closing out the conference, Dr. John Draper, executive director of the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools, will offer ideas and insights on the school board’s role in driving performance. Grounded in Jim Collins’ “Good to Great” research, Draper’s presentation will address the need to get the right people on your team and making sure they are in the right positions – without micromanaging.
And don't miss our early bird workshop:
Connecting with 21st Century Learners
Friday, March 14, 2008 • 1:00 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The digital natives are growing restless – and more than a little bored. Who could blame them? With far too many classrooms operating like 1958 than 2008, it’s easy to see why today students believe schools are disconnected from the real world.
In a powerful early bird workshop, Dr. Melinda Maddox, director of technology initiatives for the state Department of Education, will demonstrate some of the current technologies that can bring learn alive for students, allow teachers to customize instruction and raise learning to new levels. From iPods to interactive boards, Maddox will offer ideas for engaging students and expanding your schools’ capabilities.
