Education Budget for K-12 Needed Now
The fate of the education budget is in the Senate's hands Monday, May 19. AASB urges support of H.319, the education budget and asks lawmakers to avoid a special session. But the voice that matters is yours!
Universities continue their stranglehold on the budget
Universities demand $25 million be added to the bottom line or they threaten to kill the budget. The problem is that there are no additional dollars to be had. The proposed budget is already spending dollars beyond state revenue projections. It is an irresponsible request that forces the budget to be prorated next year, dramatically hurting K-12 students. Meanwhile, universities will have received those dollars up front and have alternative resources to offset their much smaller impact of proration in 2009.
K-12 voices are needed
Your local senator is back in the district until Monday. The pressure is mounting for a decision about the education budget. Universities are making calls, and their lobbyists are baring muscles. Will you make a call for K-12? Ask your senator to oppose the additional $25 million and PASS the budget!
Your phone call makes a difference because you represent a large constituency in their district. Your voice is the voice of K-12 leaders, administrators, teachers, parents and students back home. It matters.
Please contact your state senator and urge him/her to PASS the education budget Monday.
You can make a visit in the district, call or email your lawmakers while they are home. Otherwise, you can also contact their Montgomery office through the senate switchboard: 334-242-7800.
Feedback appreciated
If you are able to communicate with your Senator and get a YES or NO answer to whether they will vote to pass the budget, please let AASB know by either replying to this email or calling 800-562-0601. Thank you!
