AASB holds two major meetings annually plus special conferences, workshops and district meetings sponsored through the School Board Member Academy. Eligible participants earn credit hours toward Academy achievement levels.

March 9-10, 2012 (Core Course, 6 Academy Hours) - Leadership for Policy and Planning This course will cover developing policies that raise student achievement, the board's role in setting the direction through strategic planning and using data to set and reach student achievement goals. 

 

Housing:The Wynfrey Hotel in Birmingham is the headquarters for the conference.  AASB’s room block rate is $119 plus tax.  All reserved room blocks will be released on February 24, 2012. June 23-26, 2012 - Summer Conference
Summer Conference also offers numerous opportunities for you to interact with other school board members and superintendents from across the state. Whatever your challenges are, chances are someone else at the conference will have faced them before. Take time to pick the brains of experienced school leaders and compare notes!

 

June 23-24, 2012 - Roles and Responsibilities Orientation: Are you brand new to board service? Or, are you a veteran who needs a refresher on the role and responsibilities of a school board member?  Join us Saturday, June 23, and Sunday, June 24, prior to the main Summer Conference for the Roles and Responsibilities Orientation. This core course is presented by the AASB School Board Member Academy and is one of two orientations in the training program designed for rookie board members. This course, required to advance in the academy, covers basic public relations, education law, ethics, finance, the board’s role in governing for improved student success and other important topics to help you be successful. Attendees will earn 8 credit hours. Pre-registration for AASB members is $120.

 

Housing: Perdido Beach Resort is the headquarters for the conference.  AASB’s room block rate is $244 for a standard room and $264 for pool view rooms (prices may vary slightly depending upon room location and type) plus tax.  All reserved room blocks will be released on Friday, June 1, 2012. However, that does not ensure rooms will be available until then.

Dec. 6-8, 2012 (8 Academy Hours) - Reserve your hotel room now for AASB's Annual Convention and business meeting at The Wynfrey Hotel in Birmingham Dec. 6-8, 2012. Eligible attendees earn Academy credit.

 

AASB's School Board Member Academy brings together nearly 500 school board members and education leaders from across the state for its annual convention. The three-day event features nationally acclaimed speakers in information-packed general sessions, an array of clinics on timely topics and exhibits of school products and services. Also, delegates from member school boards assemble for the business meeting to elect AASB’s leaders, vote on resolutions and approve bylaws changes.

Dec. 6, 2012 - Effective Boards and Relationships Orientation

 

New school board members are urged to participate in the Dec. 6 AASB Effective Boards and Relationships orientation course just prior to the association’s convention. Every member must take both parts of the leadership orientation course to advance in the Academy.
