March 19-20, 2010 (Core Course, 6 Academy Hours) - Leadership for Financial Accountability - The Academy will present this core conference at The Wynfrey Hotel in Birmingham. Proration is a word that no public school system wants to hear. Unfortunately, as the economy continues to languish, the word proration gets thrown around and school systems face difficult choices. March 19, 2010 (2 Academy Hours) -"Early Bird" Workshop - Governing for Higher Achievement. What more can you do to impact student learning? To answer that very question, several school-board-and-superintendent teams are participating in Alabama’s Governing for Achievement Project. The program is based on the Iowa Lighthouse research that showed a link between board beliefs and actions and student success. Participating school systems – those in Brewton, Cullman, Muscle Shoals and Tarrant cities and in Elmore, Madison, Montgomery, Perry and Tuscaloosa counties – are in the process of completing 11 training modules designed to help them gain leadership skills and abilities necessary to focus board meetings on what matters most – student performance. Discover the emerging best practices as a result of this initiative. Listen to school boards and superintendents across the state talk about what they are doing to create a culture in their schools that focuses more on teaching and learning. Learn how they are developing the capacity to set and reach higher expectations so that all of their students have the opportunity to suceed.

AASB's Annual Convention and business meeting will be at The Wynfrey Hotel in Birmingham Dec. 2-4, 2010. Eligible attendees earn Academy credit.

AASB's School Board Member Academy brings together nearly 600 school board members and education leaders from across the state for its annual convention. The three-day event features information-packed general sessions, an array of clinics on timely topics and exhibits of school products and services.

Also, delegates from member school boards assemble for the business meeting to elect AASB’s leaders, vote on resolutions and approve bylaws changes. For more information, contact us. December 2-4, 2010
